The Mountain Song

The Mountain Song by PigPen Theatre Co. is a mesmerizing blend of music, storytelling, and inventive stagecraft. It follows a carpenter who climbs mountains and traverses rivers to attend his daughter’s wedding – without a clue as to where it’s taking place. Featuring folk-inspired live music, puppetry, and shadow play, the show is a heartwarming and adventurous exploration of the power of storytelling suitable for the entire family.

Coronado Playhouse is thrilled to be producing another PigPen Theatre Co. show after the success of 2019’s The Old Man and the Old Moon!

Rehearsals will begin on March 19th. The rehearsal schedule will be provided in advance of the first rehearsal based on performer availability.

The production runs  April 25th – May 18th, with performances Thursday – Saturday at 7pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. No conflicts with performance dates will be permitted.

All performers are guaranteed a $100 honorarium to cover the costs of transportation for rehearsals plus a $15 honorarium per performance. If you are a musician in the show, there is more pay available. Note that this is strictly a non-union production.

We will be accepting DIGITAL SUBMISSION ONLY, due by March 16th, 2024. Please submit a video of yourself, not to exceed one minute, singing a song from the folk/Americana genre or in the style of PigPen Theatre Co.

The audition form collects your personal information — including any known conflicts with the rehearsal dates. Only the director and members of the creative team will have access to your submission materials.

Callbacks will be by invitation only and scheduled at the discretion of the director.

Actors who can sing, puppeteer or play a musical instrument (guitar, banjo, keys, percussion, violin). Collaboration and devising experience is helpful.

Mountain: A rather verbose, talking mountain, who narrates the tale. Kind, and full of folksy charm.

Carpenter: A father who can build nearly anything with his hands if he sets his mind to it. Thoughtful and determined.

Young Abigail: The carpenter’s daughter. She can’t speak with her voice. Playful and incredibly intelligent.

First Messenger: Eager and bad at holding his tongue.

Second Messenger: Strict and with a flare for the dramatic. Frustrated with their partner.

First Scoundrel: Hangs out with their pals at the edge of town, warning travelers.

Second Scoundrel: Part of the gang.

Third Scoundrel: Also, just part of the gang.

Goose: A talking goose who spends his days flying and contemplating the world. Affable and easy going.

Calvin: A hunter. Pious and rather stupid.

Jeffrey: Calvin’s friend and hunting partner. Possibly even Less intelligent than Calvin.

Emmit Jones: A giant of a man who lives in the wilderness. Boyish and gregarious and always willing to help those in need.

Cowboy: The mayor of a ‘town’ and the end of a river. Full of energy and finds creative ways to deal with his loneliness.

Coyote: A talking Coyote that knows how to shoot a gun. Extremely menacing but lazy.

Crows: Some birds

Abigail: A fully grown version of a Young Abigail. Highly educated and extremely kind, a good mother to her own daughter

Alex’s Track: First Messenger, Third Scoundrel, Jeffrey, Cowboy, Abigail

Arya’s Track: First Scoundrel, Calvin, Coyote

Ben’s Track: Mountain

Curtis’ Track: Young Abigail, Second Scoundrel, Emmit Jones

Dan’s Track: Carpenter

Ryan’s Track: Second Messenger, Goose
